OPIOID ANALGESIC

Respiratory Depression
Euphoria
Sedation
Orthostatic Hypotension

Nursing Considerations:
  • Management of sever pain
  • continuous dosing is more effective than prn; may be given by patient controlled analgesia (PCA)
  • PO: onset 15-60 minutes, peak 30-60 minutes, duration 3-6 hours
  • IM: onset 10-15 minutes, peak 30-50 minutes, duration 2-4 hours
  • IV: onset less than 5minutes, peak 18 minutes, duration 3-6 hours
  • Withdrawal symptoms may accur: nausea , vomiting, cramps, fever, faintness and anorexia
  • Physical dependency may result from long term use.

digOxiN

DIGITALIS GLYCOSIDES

Side Effects (HH)
Headache & Hypotension

Nursing consideration:
  • Used in treatment of CHF, atrial fibrillation, flutter or tachycardia, cardiogenic shock
  • check pulse if less than 60 beats per minute (adult) or 90 beats per minute (infant), hold the med and contact clinician
  • PO: with or without food; may crush tablets and mix with food/fluids
  • Do not open, chew, crush capsule
  • Contact physician if loss of appetite, lower stomach pain, diarrhea, weakness, drowsiness, headache, blurred or yellow vision, rash, depression
  • Eat a sodium-restricted and potassium-rich (bananas, orange juice) diet to keep potassium level normal
  • Avoid OTC meds and herbals, many adverse interactions may occur

Procainamide

Procainamide
ANTI-ARRHYTHMICS

Side Effects
BRNNDHFV- BradyCardia, Nausea &Vomiting, neutropenia, dizziness, Hypotension, Fever & Rush.

Nursing Considerations:
IV: monitor CBC, blood levels, I&O, daily wieght; sustained-release preparation peak in 15 to 60 minutes.
PO: best absorption on empty stomach,may take with food to decrease GI upset; sustained-release procainamide preparations reach peak concentraion in 1 1/2 to 2 hours.

Avoid caffeine

Aspirin

Aspirin
NONOPIOID ANALGESIC


Side Effects
(NVR) nausea, vomiting, rush


Nursing Consideration:
Management of mild to moderate pain or fever, transient ischemic attacks, Prophylaxis of MI, ischemic stroke, angina.


PO: onset 15-30 minutes, peak 1-2 hours, duration 4-6 hours.
RECTAL: onset slow, 20-60% absorbed if retained 2-4 hours.


With long term used check for liver damaged: dark urine, clay-colored stools, yellowing of skin and sclera, itching, abdominal pain, fever, diarrhea.


Give 30 minutes before exercise for arthritis


Discard tablets if vinegar like smell


Do not give to children or teen with flulike symptoms or chicken pox; Reye's syndrome may develop.
